Digital Rebirth: A Glimpse into the Future by R. E. Smith
The New Dawn |
The Digital Renaissance is unfolding and the laws of adaptability will once more play a vital role in shaping our existence. The process of natural selection will once more come to the forefront and only those equipped with the knowledge of the changes in technology will be able to cope and emerge triumphantly.
What is Natural Selection?
Natural selection is an evolutionary theory that is expounded on by Charles Darwin. It focuses on the process by which organisms better adapt to their environment with the aim of survival. Some examples include the Peacock, Deer Mouse, Peppered Moth, and various microorganisms. Due to this sudden change humans are now forced to adapt to the changes.
What is the Digital Renaissance?
This refers to the rapid, unconventional, and intellectual changes taking place in society and how we utilize the technologies available today to shape the world around us. It refers to the simple and complex use of technology to carry out activities such as banking, shopping, marketing, driving, or even flying an aircraft from the comfort of your home. Simpler use includes paying bills, cyberloafing, and even posting things on social media for recreational purposes. This sudden change and spike in technology have forcibly given birth to a new age and a new generation that I refer to as the "Technos" who will come into this world screaming and crying ready to make their mark in our global community.
The Big Picture
Have we really thought about the impact that this sudden and radical shift has on our society? Let us examine a few key areas such as Education, Politics, and Employment that this paradigm shift has impacted tremendously. Though we welcome this rebirth, this new birth let us not be naive to the fact that this sudden shift comes with its Pros and Cons.
- Education has long been one of the vehicles that drive our world and it is one of the areas that is greatly affected by this digital change. These changes are so phenomenal that it is nothing short of transformative. The way we view education and the teaching/learning experience has literally changed overnight. The use of Information and communication technology has been slowly filtering into our learning institutions as administrators methodically introduce these new aged technologies in recent years.
Nonetheless, the entire world is now expected to grab hold of this digital wave and master it like pro surfers. The truth is many are not equipped with the knowledge to even navigate the most basic of these technologies. In many countries, there are communities that have never seen these technological advancements let alone use them. Therefore many will be left behind in what will be the "New Dark Ages" as the world marches forward to combat the challenges of our "New normal". For those of us who are so privileged let us not forget those who are yet to interact with the new advancements of the digital age.
- Our Political landscape has and will continue to change in this digital reformation. Our political leaders around the globe are now seeking and promoting access to information and communication technology that will be used to spread their ideologies and views far and wide as a means of winning over the support of the masses. Soon we will no longer require Polling Stations for elections as we will be able to elect the leader/s of our choice by the tap of a figure. So I ask what about the voiceless? who will advocate for those countries, those communities who are yet to access the Internet or Cable TV? Will we leave them behind to face famine starvation or even death?
- This brings me to my point on Employment. The advancements made in technology are so instrumental to ensure growth that many firms are making the full transition to use various Management Information System. These systems will be used to capture data from all areas of the business such as sales, marketing, employee records, customer records, and the list goes on. One area that we must pay attention to is the inevitable increase in unemployment due to this digital transformation. Many are not able to or even in the frame of mind to reinvent themselves to become successful admits this digital solar flare. The changes will no doubt make life easier and it is welcomed but let us remember to help the seemly helpless transition into the Dawn of a New Era by ensuring equal opportunities, access, and affordability for all.
Glimmer of Hope
While we prepare for the changes and improvements in technology. Let us remember the things that really matter. Let us remember those who are suffering from hunger and starvation. Let us remember those who are still living a primitive lifestyle, let's us remember those who can barely afford the basic necessities. Let us remember to stop and pray for our brothers and sisters who are less fortunate than ourselves. Let us set aside a portion from the little that we have to give to those who have none. Let us remember that " the fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" James 5:16. Let us be sure to remember that there is a big difference between the standard of living and quality of life. Therefore as we face this new normal it is up to us to decide how we will emerge as a people, as a group, and as a nation. Let us not lose hope because this too shall pass and we will emerge as a better nation, a better race, and a superior species.
